The Esoteric Foundations of Astrology According to Theosophy | Pablo Sender

Astrology has been known to humanity for millennia, and many who study it deeply recognize its power to describe people's traits, their changing psychological states, and even future events in their lives. In spite of this, little has been said about the mechanisms by which the movement of distant astronomical bodies can be related to the personalities and lives of individuals.

In this talk, Pablo Sender, Ph.D., presents how Theosophical teachings explain this connection between the cosmic and human systems, which takes place simultaneously at the levels of our spiritual Self, our subtle and physical bodies, and our personal karma.

Pablo Sender, Ph.D., became a member of the Theosophical Society in his native Argentina and has presented Theosophical lectures, seminars, and classes around the world. He is the author of Evolution of the Higher Consciousness, and his articles have been published in several Theosophical journals. Learn more at his website: www.pablosender.com.

Part One
The Parisian Years: 1895-1916

DANE RUDHYAR was born Daniel Chennevière, of Celtic and Norman ancestry, on 23 March 1895 in Paris, France. His birth name was given up in 1917, a few months after reaching New York. He had a sister, lost his father in 1911 and his mother in 1954.
Rudhyar began playing piano at age seven, and started composing for the piano in 1912. The surgical removal of a kidney at age thirteen exempted him in 1914 from military service, actually saving his life as the regiment he would have joined was completely wiped out in the 1914 French retreat from the Marne. He received a bachelors degree in philosophy from the Sorbonne at age sixteen.
At age sixteen, Rudhyar first realized two things which conditioned his entire life and work: (1) Time is cyclic, and cyclicity governs civilizations as well as all aspects of existence; (2) Western civilization is coming to what could be symbolically called the autumn phase of its cycle of existence. Such realizations, which were largely spontaneous and intuitive (though influenced by his reading of Nietzsche), made Rudhyar feel the urge to divorce himself from Europe and to seek a "New World" — a land where he could sow himself as a seed, carrying within his being the harvest of whatever was viable and constructive in the European past. The ideal of the "seed man" thus rose in his consciousness, dominating his thinking and his actual living.
His first book, Claude Debussy et son oevre, was published by Durand of Paris in the spring 1913, together with three short piano compositions. The book was intended to be titled Claude Debussy and the Cycle of Musical Civilization, and in addition to biographical information on Debussy it contained Rudhyar's ideas about time, cycles, and the development of music. However, the publisher deleted the philosophical and historical parts and gave the remaining biographical sketch a new title. For a while he attempted law study, but gave it up, becoming a regular contributor to Le Revue, which, along with looking older than his mere seventeen years, opened many doors for him in the avant-garde world. Later, he acted as secretary to the famous sculptor Auguste Rodin.

In 1913 Rudhyar witnessed the premiere performance of Stravinsky's Sacre du Printemps. In that year he began an association with two highly creative personalities — Valentine de Saint-Point and a young man named Vivian Postel Du Mas — involved in a futuristic form of multimedia performance art, an abstract synthesis of dance-motion, poetry, music, geometrical form, color and perfume, known as Métachorie (meta dance). A controversial and outspoken personality, Ms. de Saint-Point is today recognized as the prototypical female performance artist.
Rudhyar had written several short orchestral scores, now lost, for Métachorie in 1914 — Trois Poëmes Ironiques and Vision Végétale — and eventually a performance was arranged for New York.
Due to wartime U-boat activity in the North Atlantic, Rudhyar, along with Ms. Saint-Point and Vivian, had to first travel to Spain, where they embarked for New York during November 1916. The photo above shows Rudhyar in Spain while waiting passage to America.

Dane Rudhyar
Paris, 1907. Age 12.

Whatever burned so brightly in the spirit of the young man, brimming with intellectual and psychic energy, who wrote a book on Debussy at the age of 16, who had his unorthodox ballet scores performed at the Metropolitan Opera House at age 21, and who composed a substantial and vigorous body of music by the age of 35, burn brighter still as we honor his 80th birthday. His life and his music - such perfect realizations of his vision of the new Seed Culture - will continue to inspire us, every one.

Order. Restoration of the Plan

 Source: https://blog-en.theplanetarysystem.org/2021/11/05/order-restoration-of-the-plan/

Order. Restoration of the Plan” is the seventh Goal of the Plan for the spiritual evolution of Humanity, shared several times in these pages and at the basis of the TPS project, dedicated to sowing Ideas, Formulas and Forms for a new Culture and Civilization.

At the end of the fifth seven-year period of its first cycle of implementation (2021 is the year 5.7 of the 49 years/Goals: 1987-2035), in consonance with today’s celestial direction between Sun, Earth and Uranus, sacred Luminary of the Seventh Ray of Ceremonial Order and Magic, we therefore assert the Restoration of Order and of the Plan on Earth.

The Plan, in its current and first formulation, was intuited in 1990 by an enlightened thinker, E. Savoini, who ordered in a Pythagorean Lambdoma with 49 Goals the indications given by the Tibetan Master regarding the work of the planetary Hierarchy, that Order of Masters guiding from within the advance of evolution and in charge of executing the planetary Purpose through a Plan, for all kingdoms of nature including the human one.

This squaring of the circle was and is a magical/masterful work to activate and order, first of all inwardly, at the level of motives and psychic energy, the collaboration of the new Group of world servers according to the hierarchical intentions, envisaged for the coming Age of Aquarius.

The Restoration of the Plan by the three fundamental cosmic Energies (Power, Love and Light – see the Great Invocation) therefore foresees the manifestation of a New Culture and Civilization (Fifth Goal of the Plan), through the Initiation of the human Group (Third Goal) which, thanks to the conscious effort of the World Servers – and the unwilling one of unconscious humanity – to imitate the Hierarchy (Fourth Goal), will be able to evoke the Return of the Christic Spirit (Second Goal) and a New World Religion (Sixth Goal) based on the Communion between Heaven and Earth, substantiation and essence of the Restoration of the Mysteries (First Goal).

Here are some excerpts from the Teaching on the world Order and a septenary synthesis of the Plan (from Asserting the planetary Plan):

“The power here to be evoked out of the human soul, in this hour of need, is the ability to know the Plan and to work for its furtherance, thus cooperating with those forces which are endeavouring to re-establish order on Earth and to end the cycle of aggressive wickedness in which today we find ourselves.” (EH, 278)

“Certain major and spiritual premises should lie back of all efforts to formulate the new world order. Let me state some of them:

1. The new world order must meet the immediate need and not be an attempt to satisfy some distant, idealistic vision.

2. The new world order must be appropriate to a world which has passed through a destructive crisis and to a humanity which is badly shattered by the experience.

3. The new world order must lay the foundation for a future world order which will be possible only after a time of recovery, of reconstruction, and of rebuilding.

4. The new world order will be founded on the recognition that all men are equal in origin and goal but that all are at differing stages of evolutionary development; that personal integrity, intelligence, vision and experience, plus a marked goodwill, should indicate leadership. (…)

5. In the new world order, the governing body in any nation should be composed of those who work for the greatest good of the greatest number and who at the same time offer opportunity to all, seeing to it that the individual is left free. Today the men of vision are achieving recognition, thus making possible a right choice of leaders. It was not possible until this century [XX].

6. The new world order will be founded on an active sense of responsibility. The rule will be “all for one and one for all”. This attitude among nations will have to be developed. It is not yet present.

7. The new world order will not impose a uniform type of government, a synthetic religion and a system of standardisation upon the nations. The sovereign rights of each nation will be recognised and its peculiar genius, individual trends and racial qualities will be permitted full expression. In one particular only should there be an attempt to produce unity, and that will be in the field of education.

8. The new world order will recognise that the produce of the world, the natural resources of the planet and its riches, belong to no one nation but should be shared by all. There will be no nations under the category “haves” and others under the opposite category. (…)

9. In the preparatory period for the new world order there will be a steady and regulated disarmament. It will not be optional. No nation will be permitted to produce and organise any equipment for destructive purposes or to infringe the security of any other nation. One of the first tasks of any future peace conference will be to regulate this matter and gradually see to the disarming of the nations.

These are the simple and general premises upon which the new world order must begin its work. These preliminary stages must be kept fluid and experimental; the vision of possibility must never be lost, and the foundations must be preserved inviolate, but the intermediate processes and the experimentations must be carried forward by men who, having the best interests of the whole at heart, can change the detail of organisation whilst preserving the life of the organism.” (A. Bailey, The Externalisation of the Hierarchy, pp. 190-2)

In synthesis, the Seven Goals of the hierarchical Plan that humanity must help restore:

1/1: The Restoration of the Mysteries, certainly connected to the Planetary Purpose, is the expression of Power energy on Earth, of Will and Government. This energy is emanated by the planetary Head Centre (Shamballa).

It is the occult power of the initiatory Mysteries, guarded by the Real Government, which constitutes the driving force for the directed and organized Will that can activate the Purpose on Earth.

2/2: The Return of Christ is the central magnet of the planetary Field of Service. The Christ (Bodhisattva) is at the head of both the Center of the Planetary Heart (Hierarchy) and Head (Shamballa).

The magnet of the Christic Principle (Buddhi)* lies at the core of every form and living being. From the Center, as a heart site of Life and “sun of its system”, it educates and orientates its own field of influence. The Heart of Humanity works for the awakening of Christ, or “group consciousness”, of Love as the only universal Motive.

3/3Group Initiation is the new method of the planetary evolution Plan to awaken Humanity (Planetary Throat Center).

In the Earth’s evolutionary scheme (as in just two other planetary schemes), an experiment to accelerate the common advancement is underway: carrying out the Plan for Humanity is realized through group initiation, i.e., through the conscious “coordinated cooperation towards the common Purpose”. Humanity, the Center of creative Intelligence, will be structured as a group of groups, a unitary system and hierarchical order to illuminate and administer the Planet harmoniously.

4/4Imitation of the Hierarchy is to respond and conform to the higher Model.

Hierarchy is the central Reference for all the creatures of the Planet: Humanity must imitate It and gradually identify with the hierarchical Principle. The Canon 1-3-7 of the hierarchical and universal Life is the way to be and become “in the image and likeness” of the Divine, “in united breath and unified rhythm” with the Heart of Infinity.

5/5: The New Culture and Civilization manifests the hierarchical Plan on Earth.

A project is realized through a construction work, first on mental level, then on the lower levels down to the physical appearance. The Plan foresees that humanity develops planetary Consciousness for the launch of the new Aquarian Culture based on golden relationships between the natural kingdoms and in proportion between Earth and Heaven. The Seven sectors or primary directions of the new human Culture and Civilization will manifest the universal Law of the Seven Rays.

6/6: The New World Religion unifies the planetary Society, enhancing its common ideals and values.

What makes the planetary Community converge and gather, are the natural bases common to every being: all that is better, beautiful, good, and true – that is, Reality, Heaven, and Its eternal Truths. True World Religion, the Science of the One Soul, is the Science of Space that leads to Unity through Diversity, toward a unitary Synthesis.

7/7: The Order – Restoration of the Plan irradiates the hierarchical Plan and Order on Earth, Their systemic Structure and solar/cosmic Rules.

It is necessary to “entify” or embody the hierarchical Order ever better in action, both subjective and objective, individual and collective (at the international level and in relation to the other kingdoms), so that the One Humanity, the planetary Consciousness, can emerge and work out the Plan of Love and Light on Earth.

It is necessary to unify spirit and matter, energy and substance so that the saving force expressing the creative or ‘triangular’ relationship between Shamballa, Hierarchy and Humanity (the Head-Heart-Throat planetary Centres) can liberate the “prisoners of the planet”.

Let Light, Love, and Power restore the Plan on Earth.

* “… buddhi is found at the heart of the tiniest atom, or what we call in this system, electric fire.  For the positive central life of every form is but an expression of cosmic buddhi, and the downpouring of a love which has its source in the Heart of the Solar Logos; this is itself an emanating principle from the ONE ABOVE OUR LOGOS, HE OF WHOM NAUGHT MAY BE SAID.” (A. A. Bailey, A Treatise on Cosmic Fire, p. 1226).

THE SOUL'S PURPOSE FORMULA

About Adele Barger Wilson

Book by Adele Barger Wilson:
AN ESOTERIC JOURNEY THROUGH THE ZODIAC
THE INNER MEANINGS OF THE SIGNS

NOTE:  This article has been slightly revised from its original 1983 version.

The following Soul's Purpose Formula technique has been slightly modified from that first developed by Dr. Douglas Baker and taught to me by Judi Laws and Lynn Koiner of the Amethyst group in Washington, D.C., in the early 1980s.   This Formula is based on the principle set forth on page 17 of Alice Bailey's Esoteric Astrology that the ascendant of a horoscope is the key to "the spiritual goal and purpose of the immediate incarnation and of the immediate succeeding incarnations."   The second two elements of the Formula are based on the astrological principle of house cusp rulership. In constructing the Soul's Purpose Formula, only the esoteric rulerships, as given in Esoteric Astrology, are used:

SignRulerSignRuler
AriesMercuryLibraUranus
TaurusVulcanScorpioMars
GeminiVenusSagittariusEarth
CancerNeptuneCapricornSaturn
LeoSunAquariusJupiter
VirgoMoonPiscesPluto

The Formula is to be used only on charts calculated for exact birth times.   Solar or noon charts are meaningless when working with soul-level astrology.
Among the modifications that I have introduced to the Soul's Purpose Formula are the following: (1) Planets in the first house are considered as part of the Formula; and (2) a planet up to eight degrees behind a house cusp is considered conjunct that cusp and affecting its house rather than the house in which it is technically found.   Modification number (2) can be applied with flexibility due to the inaccuracy of most birth times and the use of different house systems, and may thus be overridden by intuitive judgement.
Planets conjunct any of the "soul's purpose rulers" are included in the Formula and considered as important as the rulers themselves.  The suggested orb for these conjunctions is about four degrees, but this orb may be decreased or increased depending upon intuitive judgement and possible complications due to the involvement of a planetary stellium.
There are three elements to the Soul's Purpose Formula, each being separated by a large dot, which can be translated as "ruled by."  Instructions for determining each of these three elements are as follows:

First Element

Rising sign and "asc," followed by any planet in the first house, along with the sign of this planet and "1" in parentheses.   Example:

Capricorn ascendant with Mars in Capricorn in the first house

Second Element

Esoteric ruler of the rising sign, the sign of this esoteric ruler, and the house of this esoteric ruler, followed by any planet(s) within orb of conjunction of this esoteric ruler, preceded by the symbol for "conjunct", enclosed in parentheses.   If the sign on the cusp of this house is different from that of this second element esoteric ruler, place the cuspal sign within a large "C".  Example:

Saturn conjunct Mercury in Virgo in the seventh house with Cancer on its cusp

Third Element

Esoteric ruler of the sign on the cusp of the house containing the rising sign ruler.  This will be either the esoteric ruler of the sign within the "C" or, in absence of the "C", the esoteric ruler of the sign in which the ascendant ruler is found.   As with the second element, any planets conjunct this third element ruler should then be placed in parentheses, preceded by the symbol for "conjunct," as explained previously.  Also as with the second element, if the sign on the cusp of this house differs from that of the third element ruler, place it within a "C".   Example:

Neptune in Pisces in the second house

For further clarity, these first-, second-, and third-element examples are repeated in the following illustration:

*Time adjusted for Time Zone 5 from original LMT of 3:58 p.m.
(birth data from Profiles of Women by Lois M. Rodden)

Grandma Moses' Soul's Purpose Formula:

Capricorn ascendant with Mars in Capricorn in the first house, ruled by
Saturn conjunct Mercury in Virgo in the seventh house with Cancer on its cusp,
ruled by Neptune in Pisces in the second house

The Soul's Purpose Formula is intended only as a guideline, or skeleton, for attempting to discern the soul-level purpose in a given incarnation.   Its symbols should be interpreted in the context of the totality of the birth chart and within the realm of the intuitive perception of the astrologer.   In the future, when the psychology of the Seven Rays becomes blended with the art/science of astrology, the interpretation of the Soul's Purpose Formula will also be qualified by the soul (and Monadic?) Rays of the native of the horoscope.
The Soul's Purpose Formula, consisting of astrological glyphs, represents an abstraction of energies characteristic of the planes/dimensions which transcend normal human consciousness.   Because words tend to limit, or even distort, the abstract ideas which they attempt to convey, one verbal expression of a Formula is at best only a partial picture of the soul's purpose of the native.  For a more wholistic perspective, it is recommended that at least two, and preferably three, verbalizations of the astrological formula be rendered.   The combination of these two, three, or more interpretations will hopefully give a type of gestalt of the astrologer's viewpoint of the native's soul purpose.
This astrological formula for describing a soul's purpose is (as is all of astrology) a fusion of language and art.   Differing from a mathematical formula in which there is a concrete, one-to-one correspondence between the symbols and what they signify, the Soul's Purpose Formula consists of symbols deriving from the plane of Buddhi, or intuition, where verbal concepts are left behind in favor of more refined, pervasive energies.   The interpretation of the Soul's Purpose Formula, then, perhaps represents astrology at its finest:  a bold attempt to bridge Buddhi with intellect by stepping down archetypal energies into verbal form.

For an example of the use and interpretation of the Soul's Purpose Formula, please see How the Soul of William Blake Spoke through his Art.
