David Bohm and The Holographic Universe

ABOUT DAVID BOHM

He was one of the 20th Century’s most brilliant physicists. Albert Einstein called him his spiritual son. The Dalai Lama relied upon him as his “science guru.” So why is it that hardly any of us know the name: David Bohm?

Growing up in a poor Pennsylvania coal-mining town during the Great Depression, David Bohm possessed a rare and maverick intelligence that baffled his parents and peers. After earning a scholarship to go to college, Bohm got the attention of the greatest minds in science, including Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the Atomic Bomb, who became his thesis advisor but would eventually turn against him.

Bohm’s explorations led him to intuit a hidden order to reality––the Quantum Potential––that underlies both the microscopic world of subatomic particles and also the macro world of stars and galaxies. Bohm had turned to Eastern thought and the wisdom traditions of India to talk about something that underlies all of creation––a realm that mystics have known about for millennia and modern science is only just beginning to explore. Bohm’s revolutionary ideas were way ahead of their time––a threat to the scientific orthodoxy. Today his ideas are gaining acceptance – but are still ahead of their time.
Brilliant minds have given the universe many names – “the Self-Aware Universe” (Amit Goswami), “the Magic Universe” (Nigel Calder), “the Looking Glass Universe” (John Briggs and David Peat), “the Conscious Universe” (Dean Radin), and “the Elegant Universe” (Brian Green). Scientists still speculate about parallel universes.

The underlying premise behind these various titles is the idea that at a deep level all things in the universe are infinitely interconnected. If this sounds more like philosophy than science, remember that until relatively recently, people researching the natural world were called “natural philosophers” and the words “scientist” and “physicist” were coined by William Whewell, only in the 19th century. But let’s get to the title of this piece, the “holographic universe.”

What is a hologram?

A hologram is a three-dimensional photograph made with the aid of a laser. The word has Greek roots, “holos” meaning whole, and “gramma” meaning message. To make a hologram, a laser is used to illuminate the physical object. The second laser beam is bounced off the reflected light of the first and the interference pattern is captured on the recording medium. When the developed film is illuminated by another laser beam, a three-dimensional image of the photographed object appears.

The difference between an ordinary photograph and a hologram (apart from the way it’s made) is in the part/whole relationship. If you cut up a regular photograph into smaller pieces, you will end up with each piece as a separate part of the whole. You will need to use your jigsaw puzzle skills to put the picture together again in order to see the original image. But if you cut up the hologram into smaller parts, each part will contain a smaller, blurrier, but exact version of the whole picture.

How does this relate to the universe and David Bohm’s idea that it resembles a gigantic hologram?

David Bohm was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, on December 20, 1917. He went to Pennsylvania State University to study physics, and later to the University of California at Berkeley to work on his PhD thesis with J.Robert Oppenheimer.

While at Berkeley, Bohm, an idealist, became involved in politics and he was labeled a communist by the FBI led by J. Edgar Hoover. This prevented him from getting a clearance to work with Oppenheimer on the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos to produce the first atomic bomb during the World War II. However, while working on his doctorate at Berkeley, he discovered “the scattering calculations of collisions of protons and deuterons” which was used by the Manhattan Project team, and was immediately classified. As a result, Bohm was denied access to his own work and wasn’t allowed to write or defend his thesis. Oppenheimer had to certify before the faculty of the university that Bohm had indeed successfully completed his research.
Bohm was awarded his PhD in physics.

In 1947, he became an assistant professor at Princeton University, where he met Albert Einstein. Einstein found Bohm to be a kindred spirit, a like-minded colleague with whom he could have fascinating conversations about the nature of the universe. While in Princeton, at the beginning of the McCathyism period of anti-communist hysteria, Bohm was called to appear before the Un-American Activities Committee to testify against fellow scientists. Pleading the Fifth Amendment, Bohm refused to testify. For this he was arrested and charged with contempt of Congress but was later acquitted by a jury. This whole affair, however, upset his career prospects at Princeton and his contract wasn’t renewed. Bohm left the United States, first moving to Brazil, then to Israel, and later to England. In England he was a professor of physics at Bristol University and later worked as a Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of London. He died of heart attack in London on October 27, 1992, aged 74.

David Bohm’s influence extends beyond physics to embrace philosophy, psychology, religion, art, and linguistics. Interestingly, his ideas have been received more enthusiastically by the arts community than by the scientific establishment. The Tibetan Master Sogyal Rinpoche once remarked that there are striking parallels between Bohm’s model of the universe and the Buddhist *bardo* teachings, as they both “spring from a vision of wholeness.”

Bohm had doubts about the theory of quantum mechanics and its ability to fully explain the workings of the universe. Despite having written a classic textbook on quantum mechanics, Bohm, agreed with Albert Einstein that “God doesn’t play dice with the universe.” While working on plasmas at the Lawrence Radiation laboratory in California in the 1940s, Bohm noticed that once electrons were in a plasma (which has a high density of electrons and positive ions), they stopped behaving like individual particles and started behaving like a unit. It seemed as if the sea of electrons was somehow alive. He thought then that there was a deeper cause behind the random nature of the subatomic world.

Bohm came up with an idea of the quantum potential to suggest that subatomic particles are highly complex, dynamic entities that follow a precise path which is determined by subtle forces. In his view the quantum potential pervades all space and guides the motion of particles by providing information about the whole environment.

For Bohm, all of reality was a dynamic process in which all manifest objects are in a state of constant flux. By introducing the concepts of “implicate order” and “explicate order”, Bohm argued that the empty space in the universe contained the whole of everything. It is the source of explicate order, the order of the physical world, and is a realm of pure information. From it, the physical, observable phenomena unfold, and again, return to it. This unfolding of the explicit order from the subtle realm of the implicate order, and the movement of all matter in terms of enfolding and unfolding, is what Bohm called the Holomovement.

Bohm believed that although the universe appears to be solid, it is, in essence, a magnificent hologram. He believed in the “whole in every part” idea, and just like a hologram, each part of physical reality contained information about the whole.

Bohm was not the only scientist who arrived at this conclusion. In neuroscience, Karl Pribram, who was working on the functioning of the brain, concluded that memories are encoded not in specific regions of the brain, but in patterns of nerve impulses that crisscross the brain in the same way that patterns of laser light interference crisscross the area containing a holographic image. Together, Bohm and Pribram worked on developing the so called “Holonomic Model” of the functioning of the brain.

Bohm believed that his body was a microcosm of the macrocosm, and that the universe was a mystical place where past, present, and future coexisted. He postulated the existence of a realm of pure information (the implicate order) from which the physical, observable phenomena unfold. Unlike classical physics where reality is viewed as particles of separate, independent elements, Bohm proposed that the fundamental reality is the continuous enfoldment (into the implicate order) and unfoldment (of the explicate order) from the subtle realms. In this flow, matter and space are each part of the whole.

In stark contrast to Western ways of thinking about the nature of reality as external and mechanistic, Bohm considers our separateness an illusion and argues that at a deeper level of reality, we, as well as all the particles that make up all matter, are one and indivisible. For Bohm, the “empty space” is full of energy and information. It’s a hidden world of the implicate order, also known as the “Zero Point Field” or the “Akasha”.

One of the most valuable insights Bohm has given us is about the nature of randomness. Randomness is considered intrinsic to some processes that are observable in the natural world as well as at the quantum level. In Bohm’s view, when a behavior is described as random, this label indicates our lack of understanding rather than the nature of the system itself. He urged us to consider a broader context and hidden variables that may be operating at a level that is impossible for our current instruments to detect.

“Randomness,” Bohm said in his interview with David Peat in 1987 “is assumed to be a fundamental but inexplicable and unanalyzable feature of nature, and indeed ultimately of all existence…However, what is randomness in one context may reveal itself as simple orders of necessity in another broader context. It should therefore be clear how important it is to be open to fundamentally new notions of general order, if science is not to be blind to the very important but complex and subtle orders that escape the coarse mesh of the “net” in current ways of thinking”.

If more scientists like Bohm were willing to treat physics as a quantum organism rather than as quantum mechanics, we might get closer to a revolution in our understanding of the universe.

The Universal Path

Universal Spirituality

The spiritual transformation of the human soul

Spirituality is something that present man has to elaborate completely.
Man has a kind of soul, which is of interest for the path of white magic. He has the spirituality only as hidden facility, and only a small part of the momentary mankind has a spiritual development.

 Spiritual self-realization

Spiritual self-realization is thus not a self-realization and self-discovery in the secular sense, but a higher self-realization in the sense of the personal dharma, a process of purification and subsequent development of the spiritual self (Jivatma, Paramatma, Trikaya) with the goal of a divine self-identification and the associated permanent enlightenment.

The path of spiritual development, the multi-stepped universal doctrine, develops the access to these high planes in contrary to the magical path, which first develops the lower and the mental planes and eventually climbs higher later.

The goal of spirituality is enlightenment (Moksha, Jivanmukti, Nirvana) and beyond.

For Human Unity

By Anna Sclar

We live in a holographic universe, which indicates that each part contains within it the whole. Form has to be perfected. The UN is the first event in history when the whole world got together to care about the fate of the world. And it’s been going on for 56 years. It is a reflection of what humanity was capable of creating in 1945.

General Systems Theory indicates that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. This applies to the UN—it is greater than the sum of the 189 member countries. A perfect United Nations exists on a subtler plane, we just need to catch up with it; to be aware of it and to manifest it.

Our planetary task is to do things correctly, to follow the Plan of Love and light. We need to learn to speak about it correctly. We are working at dissipating the veil between the exoteric and the esoteric when we start to get out of ourselves into group consciousness and eventually into cosmic consciousness.

Esoteric science teaches that everything in the universe is in motion. Everything is absorbing free energy to become more complex. Human beings can harness this energy extending it in both a concrete and abstract manner.

Crises are an opportunity for a more spiritual experience. Old forms break down to create the way for improved, more refined, and fitting containers for the new life-giving energies that are seeking manifestation.

In the Piscean age - suffering and pain had challenged us to grow.

The energy of the sixth ray, being absorbed, must be so transformed by our personalities, as to generate from the soul level - a new quality of perception and vision radiating as the will of the soul to our expanding minds ( as the seventh ray resonate to the ray one).
It is a shift in what we choose to focus on—the pain of what is being left behind, or the joy of what we are moving toward.

As we become aware of higher levels of consciousness within us, so we can recognize the Masters. Listening to the Masters is an echo of the Self.
Quote from the Agni Yoga may be considered:
“One must reach Us, discover Us, as silver ore—the best beneath the earthly crust.”

This sparked the thought of Earth as our Mother. We are part of the earth mind set, drawing closer and closer to that feminine principle, possibly drawing problems of the entire earth to ourselves.

The concept of Hierarchy and the Masters of the Wisdom can be related to the concept of evolution of everything from photons to galaxies.

It’s important to remember that Masters - are called so - because they have mastered life in the recognized three worlds of planetary life and have overcome all obstacles in the physical, emotional and mental levels in which we, humanity struggle.

We, also in these unprecedented times on our planet have the opportunity to make a major leap in consciousness.
Involved in the process of planetary initiation is the externalization of the Hierarchy and the reappearance of the Christed One—the World Spiritual Teacher.

He will be recognized and known by His Work and Not by the faith of those who believe in Him. Perhaps he will come forth in the field of Politics or in the field of Science. The Tibetan Master indicates that he will manifest in the field of those who are doing the most work. But, He comes for all people and He will be the Teacher of Unity, Love and Wisdom.

It is important to remember that when the Christ will once again openly walk within our midst and make the power of the Great Office felt, it will be as the Teacher of Love and Unity.

Everyone will feel the tremendous Love that He brings and the energy of Love will increase on our planet. Just as a magnet can cause filings to move and to create a particular shape, so will the magnetic force of His Love cause changes to occur in people and on the planet.

Comparing Him to a general is an effective analogy because He will not come alone. He will reappear with His band of workers—with many of the Teachers of Humanity. There will be ashrams outside every major planetary center.

The manifestation of the 7th Ray during this Aquarian Age is important in this process because the 7th Ray brings spirit and matter together on the physical plane and it is the demand of the disciples of the world that brings in that which the world needs.

During Pentecost the light descended and all people were able to understand each other even though they spoke different languages because they understood from a deeper level of consciousness than the one in which we normally live.

The esoteric workers must gather together, get to the core of the work to be done and break down any existing barriers. There must be unity; we must identify and recognize that we are in this together; that we are brothers. The incoming 7th ray gives us the opportunity to synthesize right here on this plane.

We must be willing to love everyone and go from tolerating others to accepting them and forgiveness is very important. When we forgive we benefit more than the one we are forgiving.
The one who is crossing your path is your teacher. Leave the judgment part to God. Talk to the person, help him or her in any and all ways.

On a group level, it is difficult to forgive such acts as genocide. It may take many generations before such acts can be forgiven.
Jesus ministered to all, even the most common criminal.

Our individual consciousness has to change. God bless the obstacles for by them we grow. The national consciousness is a result of the individual consciousness.

The required work of unity is on the mental plane. Meditation can help evoke the Souls of the nations.
We need to be aware of the power of thought energy and think creatively about how the global issues of our day may be solved.
Each thought has a certain quality of vibration. As you think about the Common Good, you align with the Masters of the Wisdom and strengthen that energy.

Master Morya proclaims, "When We advocate unity as the means of achievement, Our Advice is simply scientific. We require an intensification of energy that can be achieved only if the co-workers are united. Every breach tears the valuable tissue."

The final activity, which will bring about the externalization of the Hierarchy, must come from the outer plane of physical life. This is our awe-full responsibility.

We can cooperatively seek to supplement each other's efforts rather than hindering each other's work. Instead of criticizing each other's methods and techniques, and insisting on the exclusivity of our chosen ways, we can practice loving understanding and harmlessness.

The promise of this transitional period is that if we cooperatively strengthen each others' hands and stand together in closer and right relations, so we can replicate the powerful rhythm, which animates the inner Brotherhood.

The Evolution of Human Consciousness

Screen Shot 2015-11-03 at 9.41.53 AM

See how you resonate with the 16 characteristics of this evolved level of human consciousness, as described by Ervin Laszlo…

1. I am part of the world. The world is not outside of me, and I am not outside of the world. The world is in me, and I am in the world.

2. I am part of nature, and nature is part of me. I am what I am in my communication and communion with all living things. I am an irreducible and coherent whole with the web of life on the planet.

3. I am part of society, and society is part of me. I am what I am in my communication and communion with my fellow humans. I am an irreducible and coherent whole with the community of humans on the planet.

4. I am more than a skin-and-bone material organism: my body, and its cells and organs are manifestations of what is truly me: a self-sustaining, self-evolving dynamic system arising, persisting and evolving in interaction with everything around me.

5. I am [an] evolved manifestation of the drive toward coherence and wholeness in the universe. It is the same essence, the same spirit that is inherent in all the things that arise and evolve in nature, whether on this planet or elsewhere in the infinite reaches of space and time.

6. There are no absolute boundaries and divisions in this world, only transition points where one set of relations yields prevalence to another. In me, in this self-maintaining and self-evolving coherence- and wholeness-oriented system, the relations that integrate the cells and organs of my body are prevalent.

7. The separate identity I attach to other humans and other things is but a convenient convention that facilitates my interaction with them. My family and my community are just as much “me” as the organs of my body. My body and mind, my family and my community, are interacting and interpenetrating, variously prevalent elements in the network of relations that encompasses all things in nature and the human world.

8. The whole gamut of concepts and ideas that separates my identity, or the identity of any person or community, from the identity of other persons and communities are manifestations of this convenient but arbitrary convention. There are no “others” in the world: We are all living systems and we are all part of each other.

9. Attempting to maintain the system I know as “me” through ruthless competition with the system I know as “you” is a grave mistake: It could damage the integrity of the embracing whole that frames both your life and mine. I cannot preserve my own life and wholeness by damaging that whole, even if damaging a part of it seems to bring me short-term advantage. When I harm you, or anyone else around me, I harm myself.

10. Collaboration, not competition, is the royal road to the wholeness that hallmarks healthy systems in the world. Collaboration calls for empathy and solidarity, and ultimately for love. We are part of the same whole and so are part of each other.

11. The idea of “self-defense,” even of “national defense,” needs to be rethought. Patriotism if it aims to eliminate adversaries by force, and heroism even in the well-meaning execution of that aim, are mistaken aspirations. Comprehension, conciliation and forgiveness are not signs of weakness; they are signs of courage.

12. “The good” for me and for every person in the world is not the possession and accumulation of personal wealth. Wealth, in money or in any material resource, is but a means for maintaining myself in my environment. Exclusive wealth is a threat to all people in the human community.

13. Beyond the sacred whole we recognize as the world in its totality, only life and its development have what philosophers call intrinsic value; all other things have merely instrumental value: value insofar as they add to or enhance intrinsic value. Material things in the world, and the energies and substances they harbor or generate, have value only if and insofar they contribute to life and well-being in the web of life on this Earth.

14. The true measure of my accomplishment and excellence is my readiness to give. Not the amount of what I give is the measure of my accomplishment and excellence, but the relation between what I give, and what my family and I need to live and to thrive.

15. Every healthy person has pleasure in giving: It is a higher pleasure than having. I am healthy and whole when I value giving over having. Sharing enhances the community of life, while possessing and accumulating creates demarcation, invites competition, and fuels envy. The share-society is the norm for all the communities of life on the planet; the have-society is typical only of modern-day humanity, and it is an aberration.

16. I recognize the aberration of modern-day humanity from the universal norm of coherence in the world, acknowledge my role in having perpetrated it, and pledge my commitment to restoring wholeness and coherence by becoming whole myself: whole in my thinking and acting — in my consciousness.

If you had an “aha experience” while reading even just one of these ideas, you have the foundations of Akashic [Unity] consciousness. And if you had this experience all the way through, you already possess this crucial consciousness.
